Fence

The garden is really looking good now. We have put a temporary fence around it and I prepared two more planting lines. Now, we can at least have those ready for planting.

Progress

The plot location is fantastic. As I continue working so many helpful and interesting people walk by. Working right next to the library is the perfect place. The project is really developing into a community project. One extremely helpful man has talked with farmers at the farmers market who are willing to donate starter plants, and he is going to help with getting fencing.

I am continuing preparing the soil, its hard work but it is definitely worth it. Another man who really helped me out came by and taught me how to correctly use the tools and shared with me his philosophy of "respect the soil and the soil will respect you back," and that "you have to work the tools not let the tools work you."

Planting should start this weekend, just have to get the soil prepared. I also have moved my plants in to the greenhouse so that part of the project can also get started. I have pepper, tomato, stevia and cinnamon basil plants started and those should eventually get into the ground out front,

Garden Plans

Here are some rough sketches of the garden. One shows measurements and the other shows an idea for the layout of the garden. Of course this plan is subject to change, but its a start for the organization of the area.

First Planting Line

Today, 4/20/10, Dr. Andrew Garling and I established the first planting line. It is 3'. wide, 15' 8'' long.
We mixed in 5 Scotts® Premium Humus and Manure and 4 Garden Pro Clay Breaker Soil Conditioner. We also removed Daffodil bulbs ready for transplanting.

Moving Along 4/18/20

The morning of tilling was hindered by problems with the rototiller. We will continue on Tuesday. The soil will be tilled and amended so that planting can begin. I am going to start planning out the organization of the garden, setting it up so that we can construct a sort of raised bed type of garden. Measurements were taken: 54.5 ft long, 27 ft wide a quarter of the way in, 22.5 ft wide half way in, and 17 ft wide three-quarters of the way in. The width was measured from the NE end to the SW end, so by "in" I mean to say from the NE end of the plot. I can't wait to get planting and really getting things started.

Garden Beginning

The highlighted region is located in front of the Arlington Career Center at 816 S. Walter Reed Dr. in Arlington, VA. I was allotted the land in order to pursue my interests in gardening. I have begun on a small part of the land, flipping over the soil in order to kill the grass that covers it.
